You can begin with your baby as early as you are comfortable. We prefer babies to begin before the are 12 months old with the optimum age for a smooth transition being under 6 months. The window of opportunity still exists from 12 – 18 months where initial submersions and water adjustment take place.

Once you have begun, your baby can move through the various levels until they are around 3 years old. Should you be unable to continue with AquaBabies for this length of time we suggest you complete at least 2 courses to benefit your future swimming.

On top of this must be a ‘Happy Nappy’. This nappy has a tight seal around the leg and has been specially designed for baby swim schools. You will not be allowed into the water without both correct nappies as nappy leaks into the water mean cancelling classes to clean the pool. All children on the AquaBabies program must continue to wear both swim nappies beyond potty training, accidents still happen!

Does my baby need immunisations before swimming?

There is no need for babies to have completed their first set of immunisations before swimming. Further research on this can be seen on the NHS website www.immunisation.org.uk

How do I book and pay for a course?

We have a waiting list for courses. Please book in advance to avoid disappointment.

	What changing facilities are available?

Changing facilities vary from pool to pool. Many pools offer basic changing in confined space, with some showers available. Please arrive as prepared as possible and no earlier than 15 minutes before your session to allow optimum space for all classes.

For hygiene reasons parents must bring their own changing mat.

Please dispose of all nappies in a sealed nappy sack in a bin provided.

What if my baby has a cold or is unwell?

It is not wise to bring your baby swimming with anything more than a very mild cold. Please consider the other babies in your group as your baby will spread infection and is unlikely to enjoy swimming at that time.

If your baby has an ear infection please do not swim until it has cleared up. It is not likely to have been caused by swimming, however it will be uncomfortable and your baby's ear should be kept dry until it is clear. If your baby has repetitive ear infections you can purchase 'Ear Bandits' for swimming, and seek advice from your GP or consultant.

Babies or Adults experiencing sickness and/or diarrhoea must not swim for a minimum of two weeks to ensure other babies are not infected. Some infections (such as cryptosporidium) causing these symptoms are resistant to chlorine and can temporarily contaminate the pool should any faeces enter the water. It can take at least 2 weeks for a doctor to diagnose, therefore refraining from swimming is essential for that period of time.

Can more than one adult get in the water?

Due to the small size of the pools we only allow one adult in the water, however if the class is not full that day with permission an extra adult may attend

When can I feed my baby?

It is advisable that you feed your baby at least 1 hour before swimming. A small milk or breast feed can be given up to class time, however a full stomach is not recommended. Should your small baby become very hungry during class you may get out and breast feed pool side ( a small top up !!!) and return.

Babies are usually hungry after class and will feed again.

Please note pools do not allow food (including snacks such as raisins!) in the changing rooms.

I can`t find a disposable swim nappy small enough for my baby

Disposable swim nappies (commonly Huggies Little Swimmers) begin a size small from 7lbs. Should your baby weigh less than this please purchase the small size as the Happy Nappy will fit snuggly and provide the seal around your baby`s leg.

My baby cries a lot in the water

There are many reasons your baby may cry in the water. Some babies need to adjust to the new environment they are in, with the sounds, splashes and echoes around them.

Think about the timing of your class, is it close to a feed or nap time? And be aware of normal irritants such as teething or the beginning of a cold.

Some babies go through a crying phase specific to swimming. This commonly happens around the age of 12 months and can seem frustrating if your baby has been very happy so far. It is important not to stop coming to classes during this time, your teacher has experienced this many times and can talk you through problems and adjust your program accordingly. Your relaxed positive attitude will help and soon your baby will only cry when it is time to get out!

Can I practice outside of classes and on holiday?

Yes, infact we encourage it. Babies are more comfortable in water the more they swim. Be aware that other pools are usually cooler. Ring in advance and check the water temperature is at least 30 degrees. Never swim your baby more than you have in class and if your baby becomes cold shorten your swim time to 15 minutes.

Do I need to be able to swim or go underwater myself?

No, you can learn our techniques without putting your head under the water, though it is lovely to meet your baby underwater and share the experience.

We use pools with a depth of between 1.2 and 1.4 metres so you can stand up at all times (though 1.4mtrs is shoulder depth and would be difficult if you are less than 5'2"tall)

If you are not confident in the water please let the instructor know so that they can help.

Re-Booking

Our courses run throughout the year, and are every 5 weeks except for breaks over the christmas and easter period. You will be emailed on the third week of your course to advise you about rebooking and spaces are reserved for anyone on the course for 1 week, after that the spaces are open to others to book up and use. Bookings are based on a first come first served basis.

Refunds and Cancellations

Aquababies-SouthWales is under no obligation to refund or transfer your money in the event that you are unable to attend part of or the entire course. We regret that we are unable to offer an alternative for missed lessons. Unfortunately, what seems like one simple request is an impractically huge administrative task when spread across all our clients.

In the instance that a pool cannot be used in the short term, we will endeavour, where possible, to re-schedule your lesson. In this instance Aquababies-Southwales is not responsible for any travel expenses incurred. In the event of us having to cancel a lesson we will issue a credit against your next course fees, or issue a cheque within 5 working days of the end of the term. It is a Aquababies Southwales policy that you should never have to chase a refund.

When a pool is not available on a longer term basis (in excess of one week), on public health or other grounds outside of our control(not including operational issues with the pool), then we cannot be responsible for providing any further lessons during that time. If this occurs, and in the event that it is not possible to reschedule the classes, we will use best endeavours to either refund the unused balance of your course fees or to recompense you in services or refunds in a future cycle.

If you are cancelling at any time prior to 14 days before the course begins we will refund your money. Should you cancel within 14 days of your course commencing (up to and including 5.30pm the evening before) we will issue a refund minus a £25 administration charge.

Except in exceptional circumstances (which Aquababies-southwales will determine at its sole discretion) whether you are a first time client or an existing client, we regret that, once the course has commenced, we cannot issue refunds or credits.

Aquababies-Southwales is under no obligation to refund lessons that may be missed by local adverse weather when the venue and environs are safe and accessible and lessons are held. If this is the case with your pool, we will have informed you seperately and ask that you respect their policy.

Bonding with your baby through swimming is one of the most extraordinary and exhilarating things you can ever do. But along with the fun there are many techniques that will greatly benefit your baby's development, and that's where we come in.

We aim to provide excellent swimming classes for babies and toddlers based on the AquaKiddies/Babies programme and offer a friendly, efficient administrative service.

We aim to be the first call for baby and toddler swimming in the South Wales area. We offer competitive prices, good quality and flexible swimming courses.

Adults will learn how to teach their children to swim correctly and children will learn the foundations of future swimming, water safety and confidence techniques in a safe and clean environment.

The foundations of the program are based on the reflexes and responses of babies and young children. We aim to provide positive associations with swimming and the lessons are informative, friendly and lots of fun. Stringent health and safety procedures are rigorously followed and all of our teachers are fully qualified holding STA and/or ASA certification in addition to our extensive in-house specialist training program.

We encourage the early development of baby's natural swimming skills, enhancing their general health, awareness, eating and sleeping patterns and strengthening their cardio-respiratory functions. Our aim is to teach parents/carers the correct method to teach their child to swim. Our teaching methods are based on persuasive exercises relating to the child's stage of physical and social development. These exercises all aim towards the beginnings of learning to swim. We use gentle submersions if adult and baby are willing. We never ask you to do anything you do not want to. We use submersions as part of the technique to teach breath control, which is a fundamental part of swimming. We teach basic water safety and confidence techniques and use nursery songs in the toddler classes to engage the children and provide positive associations with swimming. However, we are more than simply a splash and fun class – we aim to lay the foundations of future swimming.

Structure

The classes are structured with a different progressive aim each lesson. There are 3 stages of baby swimming (Stage 1, Stage 2 and Advanced Babies). Each stage is five weeks long, that is, five x 30 minute sessions. Stages may be repeated as progression is matched to the individual needs of each child. We aim to be as flexible as possible, so we only ask you to commit to one stage at a time. During your course you will be asked if you would like to re-book on to the next stage so that we can offer places to new customers. Each five weeks a new block of courses starts at every level. You can return at the next stage of your course whenever and at any venue you choose.

Babies remain in Advanced Babies until they are 12/13 months when they go into a Toddler class. There are four stages of the toddler section of the program (Toddlers, Advanced Toddlers, Aquakiddies and Dolphins). The core foundation of our class structure is to teach key elements of learning to swim that relate to children's developmental stages, whilst having fun.

It was brilliant, I learned lots that I can do on my own in the swimming pool which makes all our swimming time enjoyable

- Sarah (a mum)

I was amazed at how much fun we had, as I cant swim I was really worried about getting in the water, but I didn't want Isabella to grow up with my fear of water. The instructor was so friendly and I learned lots of different skills that I can use on our own.
